Julia Michels is a Grammy Award-winning Music Supervisor at Format Entertainment. Her films have garnered both critical acclaim and over $2 Billion in worldwide ticket sales.
Julia began her career as the Director of Soundtracks for Capitol Records. She then went on to Twentieth Century Fox where, as the VP of Music, she supervised all music for projects across Twentieth’s myriad divisions. She left Fox to run the soundtrack department across all labels in the EMI Records family, and then went on to oversee music for MGM Pictures before venturing out on her own. She found her true calling working as an independent Music Supervisor and has proven time and again that her contributions translate to major box office success.
Julia had the honor of winning a Grammy in 2020 for her work on A Star Is Born. In 2015, she received a Billboard Music Award, an American Music Award, and a Grammy Award nomination for her work on Pitch Perfect 2. She is the winner of the 2010, 2012, and 2019 awards for Outstanding Music Supervision in Film by the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and the winner of the 2011, 2012, 2017, and 2019 awards for Best Supervision in Film by the Guild of Music Supervisors. Julia is the newly elected President of the LA Chapter of the Recording Academy, for which she has been a board member for the past 10 years, as well as a member of the Motion Picture Academy. Julia is also honored to be on the Advisory Board for We are Moving the Needle, an organization specifically created to support women in all aspects of the recording industry.
Aside from the accolades and awards, nothing showcases Julia’s skills and work reputation better than her consistent and continuous stream of projects. Upcoming releases include the Jerry Seinfeld directed and acted-in Unfrosted, the story about the evolution of the Pop Tart in the 1960s, as well as Back in Action, an action comedy starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Recent releases include Cocaine Bear, Luck, The Starling, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, The Old Guard, A Star Is Born, The Greatest Showman, the Pitch Perfect franchise, Trolls, and Bad Moms. Prior box office successes include the blockbuster The Devil Wears Prada, box office smashes Sex and the City (1 and 2), the critically acclaimed drama The Blind Side, all four Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, and the Oscar-nominated (Best Song) and Grammy Award-nominated (Best Soundtrack) August Rush, and many others.
When Julia is not music supervising, she spends her time mentoring young aspiring music industry professionals, which has always been a passion and calling for her to “pass experience and knowledge down to the next generation.”
